As you know I have had some negative experiences with handicap parking. Mainly with people parking over and into the striped area that is meant for vans like ours with the side deployed wheel chair ramp. There have been times too, when people either appear to be or outright are just abusing the privilege, up to and including using the spaces for convenience (no placard, no plate).
So onto the thing. I have started using the HC spots even when she is not with me because I am having so much trouble walking any distance. For years I just dealt with the pain from my back radiating through my lower back, sacrum, and legs. That pain now feels like being dropped in molten metal and sets off all kinds of other feelings one being instability. My feet have been the final straw through. I'm literally fighting to keep upright without assistance these days.
There is no question that I could get the doctor to sign off on a placard for myself but I've got hers and it seems silly to pay the DMV for 2. It seems even sillier to have to rotate them every time I or we go somewhere. Just trying not to be a total hypocrite.
Thoughts?

Asking out of pure ignorance here, but if you were certified as disabled, couldn't the two of you use the same placard or tags? Otherwise maybe get the second one and just leave it in the van so you have it questioned? I'd say that if you're having problems walking for any distance now then use the spot. And please be a dick and park in the zebra lines while you're at it Speaking of which, I told you guys about the little cards I had made up. I decided to be bold and confront a woman who was parked almost sideways at Giant the other day. I think Fuck You Bitch were the nicest words out of her mouth, after pointing out that she had a placard (my reply was 'I really don't care - you can't park like this'). My friend tells me that that's pretty much par for the course with the exception that she gets called a fat bitch because she's overweight. Which leads me to question 2 for you John. When you get your placard, do they specifically tell you either verbally or in writing that it's illegal to park in the stripes? Cause if not, I'm going to start a lobbying campaign to get them to do that.

Nope you just fill out a form, have your doctor sign it, and take it / mail it to the DMV with a check for whatever they cost now.
Since posting this I started wondering about the permanent plates. Need to look into further on their webby tonight.
At the end of the day I think the best alternative would be for me to get a placard because the only time she's transported I will be in the car. Can't believe I didn't think of that to start with.
