I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful day with family and friends. It certainly looked like a beautiful day.

Thanks. We spent the day up in Goldvein with the kids and grandkid which was made even better by the fact that we both seemed to feel well. Yesterday was kinda ugly and the night before was all the way ugly. I still don't have much of an appetite but I got down some awesome turkey and mashed potatoes/gravy. So much food for 6.1 people it was ridiculous but she learned it from me.
We brought home some cheesecake and apple pie (both from Costco), which I'm hoping at least one of them will call my name sometime tonight.

We were at the resort. So. Much. Food.
There were three turkeys, two hams and tons and tons of side dishes and desserts. I thought I was going to explode.
So of course, I came back for the 'evening seconds' - they put out leftovers so you can have more!
Had an amazing lemon chess pie, and an apple caramel pie too.
Was a beautiful day, and Friday morning was beautiful until the temps seemed to suddenly drop. Now I'm cold.

Isn’t it sad that Thanksgiving has become all about how much one can eat?

Ant it a shame all the major holidays have become about excess?
I had commented the other day about how we seemed to be better as a society when the only thing open on thanks and Christmas was the dart drug, but only for a short window in the morning. We would walk across Rt 236 to get batteries and cigarettes and if it was after noon, the only thing you could get from the gas stations were cigarettes from the machine out front.

I agree as well.
There was some caterer in Texas who charged an obscene amount for Thanksgiving dinner, and then didn't deliver. Just cause to be pissed, but the amount of people who said that there would be no Thanksgiving, even though they had food in their house and all their friends and family.
But no turkey = Thanksgiving destroyed. We've lost all meaning of giving thanks.

What do we expect when we have kids that get graduation ceremonies for kindergarten, 4 foot trophies for playing tee ball, smartphones for their 5th birthday, $1000 shoes and jackets, tattoos, breast implants, "side by sides" and brand new cars for graduation all before they're 18? Those kids grow up to be adults programmed into commercialization and consumerism, eventually becoming unappreciative for hardly anything they have. I've seen it already starting with Nugget's parents.
Look around. It's not just holidays being exploited. It's literally just about every "occasion" at this point.
My daughter asked "any ideas for mom for Christmas" and I said no, the things we want and need can't be wrapped in pretty paper or posed for instagram. Ended that conversation real quick.

My mom wants donations to causes she supports.
Last year we donated to a homeless shelter in her county. Daughter donated to a tiger sanctuary.
This year we'll do the same, but I did get her a little ceramic thing that will sit on a table and hold her reading classes since she's always misplacing them. My sister bought her tickets to a concert she wanted to see (was at a small venue) last year, but I don't think she has enough stamina to sit through a 2 hour concert + the drive over and back anymore.
We (sisters and I) did have an agreement that we would do a 'substantial' gift for nieces until college graduation - think $50. I get her a Starbucks gift card since she's a total addict. She graduates in December, so gc and a graduation gift, then we're done.
It's very refreshing to have a small gift list - saves on money, wrapping and all the hoopla. We've come to the point where my mom gets the most gifts, which to me is as it should be - she gets spoiled, and we get to spoil her. Usually things like a book and gift card to Barnes and Noble, or an ornament and a donation to a charity she supports. So something small, but meaningful to her.
For the past two years we've just gone to a Thanksgiving potluck. Easy and it's nice to just sit and talk to people.
