What if stores started putting in two sets of doors that included the ability to lock robbers, thieves, etc between them as they try to exit? There are some businesses that do something similar in other countries but I've not seen it here. Instead of an alarm going off as they try to leave, the doors simply lock. Ideally it would be after they exit the first set and lock them in between the two sets, but that would only be plausible if there were no one else trapped in there with them. So the outer door would lock regardless, and only lock the inner doors when possible and/or where the businesses are able to afford the upgrade vs the cost of losses. Current measures seem largely ineffective. www.facebook.com/reel/694317719082643

I like this. And for many stores, it wouldn't be a huge deal. Places like Giant and Walmart already have a foyer type of arrangement. There would just need to be a divider in the foyer to prevent those from entering interacting with those leaving.
BUT, it would also require having only one entry/exit point, or having an employee watch the exit points. And we all know that costs money! Better to let people loot at will, complain about the costs of shoplifting and then close that particular location!
Remember the old days when they actually stopped you if you set off the door alarm?

At some point in the very near future I'm sure the AI will advance to where unpaid for/stolen items will trigger a lock or some other measure to prevent the items and/or the person from leaving the store. In all honestly, I'd be okay with that vs the stupid random receipt checkers.
Sidebar: I always get a kick out of the ones at Costco and BJs. It's like, they look at your receipt and look at your cart and badda bing you're on your way. Pointless and impractical. Would you want to shop somewhere that pretty much forces self checkout on you and yet you get stopped and inventoried on your way out the door? If you can pay someone to check my receipt item for item, you could've damn sure put that person/s on a register.
But yeah, while I'm not a huge fan of AI in general because of the potential and inevitability of it becoming intrusive and weaponized, this is one area where I think it would be beneficial and highly deterrent.

Same with Wal-Mart. My shit is in bags - how the hell do you know if I stole something or not?
What I don't understand is why manufacturers can't embed something into the barcode that would signal an alarm if it's not scanned at a register. So my box of Lucky Charms will sound an alarm if I try to abscond with it. Seems easy enough to do. Combine that with your door lock system, and I think shoplifting would go down by a lot. And it wouldn't require AI either.
Plus if the barcode on the item itself was embedded, it would prevent customers from swapping stickers to try and scam the system.

I'd need to look into this deeper to see the details of how it works so only take this for what it is... From what I understand, Amazon had or has stores (food stores I think) that you went into, picked up your shit, and you got the bill when you left the store. IOW something scanned what you had in your cart on your way out.
I'm sure you know this but tons of products in some stores like Lowe's for example, have little devices that used to be just stuck on the boxes, but are now being actually put in the boxes by the manufacturers. They will trigger the alarm just like the apparel tags do. Not sure they need to tag literally everything in a store but given the above, I'm 100% sure the technology exists. Adding or integrating it into an anti-theft system should be, if it's not already, used in businesses that can justify the cost vs losses.
Simply, if you pass a detector with an item that wasn't scanned, the outer doors lock and you will get a visit from the trust but verify folks in blue.

In Mangolini’s world, all shoplifters will be shot. So locking the doors will be like shooting fish in a barrel. 🤣🤣
