The Moss Free Clinic has been around for decades, and has served many, many, many people without healthcare, or with inadequate health care.
They started out downtown, and eventually MWH offered them a building by the hospital. With that expanded space, they were able to add a pharmacy and a dental clinic.
MWH gave them building maintenance and landscaping for free, and also a grant towards their operating budget. The clinic fundraised for the rest of their budget.
Well MWH decided that the clinic should become part of their system. The clinic declined the offer on several grounds:
1) There were no guarantees that the dental clinic or the pharmacy would continue.
2) They worried about the continuity of care under MWH.
3) Many of the clinic doctors were already contracted as part of one of many MWH healthcare groups and didn't want to also have to volunteer their time for them too (my understanding is that they have pretty much replaced Pratt as the asshole health care place).
Well, now MWH said they will not longer provide building maintenance (including IT services) or landscaping. Oh, and they're withdrawing that $500k they give them each year. Cause MWH supports other free or reduced cost places and the Moss Clinic can operate on their own. But it's not retaliation in any way for them refusing to sign that contract, and it's certainly not because they are on a piece of prime real estate on the hospital campus.
Did I mention they're also closing Kids' Station? You know the daycare right across from the hospital? The affordable place that they touted to prospective employees as a wonderful benefit (you can walk right across the street to see/pick up your kiddo)? Cause they 'need' that space for something else. And the folks who have kids there can find other 'affordable' daycare in this area. Most have said that their daycare costs are going to go up at least $150 a week if not more.
So this is a non-profit that 'helps' the people of this area? Bullshit.
And yeah, I'm writing to every fucking member on their board, and their 'charitable foundation' to let them know how I feel.
Also writing to the BOS in Stafford (the hospital has a branch up there).
Cause this shit needs to stop. Either they're out there serving the community (which includes those who are poor, or can't afford insurance), or they're not.
And if they're not, then they need to pay taxes like the rest of us.
