New Year's is coming, and I have decided that I need to get off my fat ass, and try to at least eat a little healthier.
My insurance covers consults with a dietician, so I signed up for virtual counseling.
Dietician is super nice and into making small changes and building on them. We briefly discussed protein (shoot for 30g per meal - eeek), but this week was all about fiber (I'm three weeks in). You're supposed to have at least 25g per day (again - eeeek).
So my goal for this week is to try to increase my fiber intake. She said that one easy way was to add something like flax seeds or chia seeds into my morning yogurt. Sounds like a plan!!
Had one packet (about a T and a half) of seeds. OMG, my stomach HURTS! Clearly too much at one meal. How I'm ever going to get close to 25g is beyond me at this point.
Thank God she said this was a work in progress and not to do it all at once!

I'm so fat OMG and while it usually only bothered me when I was trying to find dress clothes that fit and looked halfway decent in (nope never happens). Now it's bothering me by compounding my health problems. Son is getting married in December '24 and I want to not look like a blob in a cheap suit, sweating profusely, and uncomfortable in every way possible. So if ever there was a time, the time is now.
Haven't been to PF in months but that's going to be Step One for me. All I have to do is get there. Whatever happens inside is a bonus- it's about moving the parts that move and the mental exercise that comes naturally from it is invaluable.
Step two is going to be eating clean again, no fast food period, and as little processed food as possible. This is just as important as step one if I'm going to cut weight.
Step three, which hopefully doesn't go to shit, is to get into the "diet" with as close to 50% as possible of my daily calories from protein, less than 20% from carbs, and eliminate processed sugars entirely.
In 2020, while sitting in that apartment after a year of re-adjusting to a much MUCH less stressful life and letting everything go for the sake of recovering my sanity, I decided that on June 1 of that year I was going to find a new purpose in life to work towards. I chose getting physically healthier by doing all the above and come June 1, I pretty much stuck to it. Lost close to 40 pounds by the end of that year, and that was without reducing my trips to the DDI although it no longer served as our main source of meals to boot.
Since moving back here I've gained it all back and then some. I'm under no illusion it will be harder than last time but the key is to get Step One on the books at least 4-5 days a week.

You definitely have the right idea there!
I read an article about the 'Taylor Swift Workout' - basically you walk on a treadmill while singing aloud to her latest album. When the tempo of the song get faster, you walk faster and vice versa. Haven't done it, but it is a LOT harder than it sounds. I did something similar with a playlist back during COVID - you were supposed to sing along to the song as you walked. It was damn hard! You use a lot more breath and lung capacity than you realize when you sing!
I am a total carb person, so I don't think I'll ever get to 20% carbs, which is why I am working on my fiber intake - the more fiber you eat, the more carbs you can eat! But I've talked to friends who have had Type 2 diabetes and have successfully reversed it with diet - they've all said that as they lowered their amount of processed foods, the amount of protein and fiber in their diet went up. Let's hope that's the same for us!
I will say that since I've started to try and increase my protein, I have started to snack less. So I need to keep that up.

🤣🤣🤣I had to laugh this morning when I got an email from Tovala about some thing they’re doing to promote healthy eating. I didn’t sign up for healthy food, damnit! I’m scrimping on my meals right now because they skipped deliveries this week because of the holiday and I skipped next week’s delivery because there was nothing on the menu I was interested in eating. I want pasta, Mac & cheese, etc! So, my association with them may soon be no more.
Since I have nothing to live for, there’s no reason for me to eat healthy. Right?

Wait - are they adding healthy entrees in addition to their regular fare? That's different from getting rid of the goodness of mac & cheese!

Nope. They’ve been offering less and less of the good stuff, so I’ve been skipping more often. My last delivery was my fave, and I ordered 2 extra meals because I knew that the next week would be barren of deliveries.
I can’t remember when they ask offered plain old mac&cheese! For thanksgiving, they had white cheddar mac & cheese, which is very rich and not quite the same.

LOL! I completely fell off the wagon for the 31st and the 1st. Is it my fault that chips and dip are so delicious?

Rumor has it someone matching my description was spotted in my seat at the drunk shelter yesterday ordering multiple double jacks with a splash. Another rumor suggests that poor bastard had a bitch of a hangover this morning. As for me, I'm starting off the 2nd day with a coffee roll and a large coffee with extra extra from DD. We had a Dr appt for her early this morning and didn't get to have my cups of morning joe, and the DD was right there.
Question- If me and her are tearing up coffee rolls in the DD parking lot, does that count as "doing it in the car"?

Doin it in the car - I did a spit-take!
And my God, but I love a good coffee roll - almost as much as a cinnamon bun (not the Cinnabon crap, but a real one like they make at Pauls Bakery).
Now I'm hungry - thanks a lot.

I'll get my shit together in a couple of days. Obviously not allowing for a cheat day once in a while just makes the heart grow fonder, and the next thing you know you're at Paul's with a rental truck and a pallet jack. We have several doctors appointments in the next few weeks and all over hell's half-acre, some in the morning hours. I have a reasonable expectation that we'll need to grab coffee and some sort of baked good along our way. Still, we've resolved that no fast food is allowed so anywhere we decide to get our grub on will have to serve real honest to bob food. Qdoba or somewhere like that would work for baseline, otherwise it's cashews and Fiji water.

Well, the year of me has come to a screeching halt for the moment - I think I have a sinus infection.
Waiting to hear if I can get a z-pac.
On a side note, MWC Health Care sucks ass! My doctor had a two person practice, but the other doctor is retiring. He can't run the place by himself (they shared staff), so he's moved to MWC Health Care.
Before I could call and speak directly with a nurse, or the receptionist would get me in for an appointment or virtual visit. Now it's "Oh there are no appointments for that provider." When I asked to speak with his nurse, I was told that they'd take a message and call me back. Corporate health care for the win!

Welcome to my world. Still having a really hard time coming to grips with that long drive to go back to my old doctors out there. Funny thing is, my oldest friend in the world that I still have contact with (since I was 16) is coming up from SC to go to his rheumatologist (sp?) today and tomorrow. Haven't seen him about 5 years so that should be fun.... our thing is breaking each other's balls like super hard. My old neighbor from across the street comes from freaking Alabama to see her specialists here as well. And I can't find anyone worth a damn here. FTR his doctor is in Woodbridge where he's originally from so that doesn't really count as "around here" and I'd rather drive to 24501 than 22193 almost any day.

Yeah, the system is falling apart at the seams. We're getting to the point where it doesn't matter if you have insurance or money - you still can't access a doctor easily.
I support Medicare for all, but before that gets implemented my priority is doctors for all. We're way behind on stocking up the pipeline for needed areas.
Primary care (to me this is the number ONE priority) Psychiatric care Pediatric care Obstetrical care Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation
There should be heavy subsidies offered to anyone who goes into these fields. Make it like ROTC - you get a full scholarship and a stipend and in return you work in that field for at least 4 years. You don't graduate, you have to pay it back. And I'd offer additional subsidies to those who go into areas that are medical deserts so that people there can get care.
So you become a primary care in a place like NW DC - you get your education paid with a small stipend for expenses. You become a primary care and practice in SE DC - you get the education paid with a small stipend, but when you start practicing, you get an additional amount for practicing in an underserved area.
I don't see it happening until we strip Congress and the Senate of their free privileges at NIH and access to their doctors. Let that be reserved for the President, VP and their families. Everyone else is on their own and has to find their own doctors.

Second one is a little too accurate for me...
Z-pac is finally kicking in. Yesterday was pretty miserable - everything was starting to break up and drain which meant I spent the entire day blowing my nose and coughing my guts out.
Stay healthy you two!

We are long past healthy in my case. Way past. As I said recently, I so identify with Charlie in The Whale. I don’t eat the voluminous amounts he did, but I eat the same type of food. But the despair, isolation, loneliness, shame, self hatred, desire to have accomplished something good in his life - that is so me.

I clicked on this as I was shoveling chipped beef and hash browns in my pie hole. Fuck it. I was hungry and the food was phenomenal. It's also all I have had to eat today and totally worth the wait.

Chipped beef. I feel ill.
My mom was a terrible cook. I still have trauma over chipped beef, pork chops and corned beef. Foods I can never eat again.
Finished the z-pak this morning. Feel a lot better, but still coughing my guts out. I'll give it another day before trying to make an appointment.

We love it. Poor people's cuisine. Shit on a shingle (with ground beef) or Buddig beef on toast, or sausage gravy on buttermilk biscuits, either or with/over hash brown fried taters....... dayum!
PS That's what you get for eating with naked people!

Yeah - but if it's made badly, it leaves real nightmares.
My mom used to get the cheapest pork chops out there. Really just a bone and gristle with a small piece of meat hiding inside. Then she'd put them in a casserole dish and pour a can of potatoes over them and smother the entire dish with a can of condensed tomato soup and bake. The only eatable part of that was the canned potato part. Would have been better to have spent the money on more potatoes!

You're talking to the kid that used to get liverwurst and potted meat sandwiches in his lunchbox. Basically dog food on bread. If you could get past the smell, the taste wasn't all that bad. LOL

My grandfather would make Braunsweiger (Sp?) on pumpernickel bread with onions and mustard. Oh, and every sandwich he made he would put oleo on both pieces of bread first. I tore that shit up never even occurred to me what it was.
